You know, a lot can happen when you’re not paying attention. You step away for just a small handful of years and suddenly there’s all these new biscuits to enjoy!

I wrote in the original review that the humble Butternut Snaps – or BS’s to their friends – are almost too crunchy, but their destined matrimony with a nice cup of tea smoothes over those problems and is what they’re really designed for. And that sounds really nice and poetic and lovely; great works come from great restraints, the enemy of art is an absence of limitations, and real artists ship.
But, uh, hey, don’t you want to see what would happen if someone just took the safeties off and cranked this thing up to eleven? It’s a lot like game modding; yes, you’re going to utterly destroy any sembalance of game balance, but it’s a train wreck in the most mesmerising way. What if we took this already great biscuit, precision engineered to delicately balance texture and that golden syrup tang, and just forget all that and smother the thing in chocolate. It’s excess at its best.
This is not to throw any shade at the old BS’s. Like all of us, biscuits are a product of the environment they grew up in, and if you’ve got a Tetley ready to go, I could hear the argument that the OGs are remain better suited for that scenario. And certainly, they still hold an unassailable role as a baking ingredient; I’m particularly fond of these little cheesecakes that use the Butternut as a single-serve pie base.
But for just plain old snacking? I’m taking these new ones every time. Much like the Double Coats, there is a rivalry within the family, but I don’t think it’s as clear-cut in this case. Both Snaps continue to have their place, and we can celebrate that the world is a richer place for it.
